Red jewels are pretty easy on plants. A pair may dig a hole in the substrate for fry but they don't just dig for the fun of it. The rift lake africans... I toss in plant trimmings as snacks. They think Riccia is yummy. Really depends on what kind though, my Tangs don't touch plants and my yellow Labs don't really either. My other mbuna and Vics just destroy them. Since the ideal water conditions for them are not really plant-friendly and they prefer rocks and shells anyways, I don't even try. There are a good number of cichlids, even omnivorous types, that will do okay with plants, especially if you supply them with enough veggie material in their diet. For the widest selection, look to the New World Cichlids, SAs and CAs.
