Anything but cardinals/neons, they're very overdone, so are GBRs for that matter.
Also, platies are livebearers and might breed out of control.
It's all personal opinion. I love the look of cardinals, while others may not.

So, IMO, just get whatever fish you want - it's your tank!

so, i would be more inclined to use a single kind of somewhat smaller barb (such as cherry barbs) in a group.
i see what you are saying about contrast. that does make sense.
i might go the cherry barb route so i can atleast have some of them in there and still keep other fish. 6 of the cherry barbs?

I will be adding some some gertrudae rainbows to get three different blue eyed types in there. I think you could also add gouramis with them. It is fun to watch the male rainbows flare at each other. Truely beautiful fish.
Would rainbows and gouramis work with cherry barbs?

I vote for africans if you have hard water. I have tried to keep tetras in pH 8.4 and the outcome was just sad.

Would this work? also fill in the blanks.

6 cherry barbs
1-2 gourami (not sure exact number or male to female ratio)
3 rainbow fish (also not sure about number or male to female ratio)
1 Bristle nose pleco

is that too much or should i get a small school of tetras or something like that?
