You should have left both male and female with the eggs, especially firemouths. As fishbguy1 mentioned, both parents ensure that the eggs are well oxygenated by fanning them and cycling them around. Usually white eggs are an indication of oxygen starved eggs.
Perhaps you removed the male before he had a chance to fertilize all of the eggs. Though, 2 days should have been an ample amount of time for him to do his business. Did u witness the fertilization yourself?
On a side note: Sometimes, even the best cichlid parents eat their own eggs/fry. Have these two particular firemouths mated before?
