Im going to start stocking my 55 gallon tank. I for sure want RCS, Neon Tetras, and cories.
I have been wanting to fill every level such as bottom feeders, middle, and top feeders. I was looking at some hatchet fish as the top level fish. Would they be a peaceful fish and go well with the tetras, RCS, and cories?
Pencilfish are great. If you get golden/brown/Beckford's pencils, which are all the same type, they look like the males are trying to tear eachother's eyes out sometimes. Don't worry, they actually aren't doing that, if you look closely. They're just ramming their flanks together. It's natural competition behavior and they don't even get nipped fins out of it. The 'fights' are fun to watch because the males go even more brightly colored when they're sparring.
Trigonostigma espei are my favorite top level fish. Think of them as smaller versions of the traditional Harlequin rasbora (with a few other subtle differences). They school magnificently well and really pop in tanks with a lot of greenery (especially short foreground e.g. eleocharis acircularis, etc.) Pencilfish are also a viable choice, from my experience they don't like bright lights. If you have bright lights, they might spend the majority of their time skulking in the shadows.
Ehh well idk if I want any that "fight" or "play" I have had pencil fish before and the only peaceful ones are the gray ones and they are kind of a weird color.
Yeah I will most likly go with hatchets. I may have an open tank but I will leave alot of floating frogbit and some very small velvet lilly pad looking things that grow pretty well in my tanks as well.
Trigonostigma espei also are a choice that seem pretty cool. I googled them and looked them up on youtube and they seem to be peacful and like the top level of the aquarium
Anyone got any other suggestions or comment on the three already suggested?
I have always had good luck with White Cloud Mountain Minnows staying at the top. They are a little boisterous, like danois, but they do not bother my other fish or harm each other. As Scokaw mentioned, Pseudomugil are also a great choice.
