This is pulled directly from a forum post about this sort of thing on another site:
"Mosquitofish can be distinguished from guppies by the position of the dorsal fin in relation to the anal fin. In mosquitofish, the dorsal fin begins behind the anal fin, whereas on guppies the dorsal fin is opposite the anal fin."
According to that, you probably have some sort of especially bland-colored guppy, be it from wild or feeder stock. It could also possibly be a gambusia/guppy/gambusia hybrid. (Well, maybe.) Where did you find these?
Do not think it is any of the ones people mentioned here yet. Body shape reminds me of a different genus of livebearers, like the butterfly split-fin and others. Would not be able to pin down a species for you though. Did you get these fish from a feeder fish tank?
how big are they? how long have you had them? where did you get them? are they wild caught or captive? with out knowing some kind of info its really hard to tell just by a pic since there is no size marker
If tracking from where they were from would have helped, I would have already used that in my current research to try to ID them. I didn't just come and ask without trying to find info myself first. I have tried to track by source but that hasn't been any assistance which caused me to feel maybe it would be worth coming and asking here.
there are all kinds of native populations of wild livebearers in florida. it could be a wild guppy that has changed shape to help it survive. that is why there are other colors of wild endlers cause a few got cut off. its been seen in wild blue fin killie as well. some are more red than blue and been collected a few miles apart. knowing if they were wild cought or captive breed plays into that. with out knowing size its also hard to tell. when you do find out what they are please let us know
doesnt look like a sword body to me not even wild. swords are large fish not micro. i have swords that are still to young to sex and they are 2 times the size of my picta cross i have them with.
