Who knows if this is a true SAE?

It's kind of pale, might be the camera?

It looks like one to me. Black into tail and narrows, dark outlined scales on back, clear fins, and the black stripe is jagged on the edges.

Thanks BriDroid for the response and yes it may be the camera, I tried to lighten up the photo a bit and like I said in my original post it's a juvenile that's only about 1.5" long so I wonder if the paleness is due to it not being fully mature? Here's the same but original photo

It looks just like mine, and mine are algae eating machines. They ate BBA in my old tank.

So how many do u keep? I have a 46g with only 1 SAE but now that I'm sure it's real I want to add a second one

I have two in my 33 long. One of them is a little over 3 inches and the other is about 2.5 inches.

I have 3 of them and they are 6+ inches. 2 of them are 10 years old. They like company of their own kind and 2 is a minimum. A 46 gal can easily house 2 or 3 of them.

Its probably pale because of stress. Possibly from transport. All may saes looked like that for the first week in the tank

+1 on SAE, they do well before they grow out, then they get smart and start eating fish food, lol
