Shy cardinals

Over the last few months my school of 7 cardinals has become very shy, hiding behind plants in a corner most of the time. When they're out, they dash for cover at any sign of movement outside the tank. The pygmy cories are a little less shy but still similar. The chili rasboras are completely fearless though.

Back in the winter I was running two T5HOs, a Koralia Nano, and the filter full out. Now I'm using one bulb, no power head, and the filter at a reduced rate, so I would have expected the shy fish to be MORE active, not less.

CO2 is not an issue since I have a thriving breeding colony of SR shrimp, plus a couple of amanos which normally seem to be extremely sensitive to CO2. They're all fat and happy.

Any ideas?

Do you have other big fishes beside the chili rasboras? I have a school of 12 cardinals and they swim fearless. Actually a little trick is to feed them with some frozen shrimps. Mine they get crazy of it. They will trust you, when they see you = feeding time.

The cardinals are the biggest in the tank, slightly larger than the cories and maybe twice the mass of the chilis.

Any theories why the cardinals have become so shy while the tiny chili rasboras are partying?

How are you doing, Karl ? - long time no hear from you.
Sorry to misdirect this thread a bit - just wanted to mention I'm still using a bit of your maple whiskey that's left over from last Xmas - I use a bit of it in several marinades I make for grilled pork or chicken - it's wonderful !

Bolstering their numbers did the trick, though they still shy away sometimes when people approach.

I added some cories and chilis too.

Well I have had a similar experience with my cardinals. Although mine only became shy after two died.. They finally started becoming less skittish again then another died. When their group becomes disrupted they seem to become more skittish, also mine did the best when I had 11.. They are certainly more skittish then other tetras I have had, I think many are wild caught witch may be a major factor.
