Since it's a qt tank, leave it bare-bottomed. This makes it easier to see poop, both for clean-up and to check for internal parasites (white, stingy poop). No filter is ok. As for the heater, it depends on how stable room and water temp are. I don't need heaters in my tanks because I live in Puerto Rico. Do include a cave of some sort and a plant or two.

Thanks for the assistance, I did a large water change and vacuumed the substrate...lol forgot I put in a root tab under my crypt. was able to push it back under. I dont think I'll need a heater, room is a fairly constant 75 degrees.

Gonna go ahead and take the betta back and try again, I'll set up the QT before hand and see what happens.

I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again.

PM sent.

I did end up returning the fish, picked out a new one. Its labeled Dragonscale..but most likely just a Plaket. nonetheless it seems to be in excellent health, swimming around and flaring. Even had a bubble nest when I saw it at the store...

its now being acclimated to the QT tank I set up, we shall see. I'll post a pic tomorrow!

I forgot to tell you too keep the qt tank in the warmest room in your house since it doesnt have a heater and water temp is lower than room temp.
