I've had the same experience but between my local Petco and LFS. Most people want to jump on the band wagon that Petco/Petsmart and terrible places to buy fish, but IME it comes down to the individual store. Some of my fish I buy at Petco and some from the LFS. Either way, I've had good and bad luck from both places. Not to mention that the aquatics specialist at Petco is one of the most knowledgeable people that I've ever came across.

Yeahhhh, just had to return two dead otos to my LFS. They died as soon as I got home. And they even had the nerve to tell me my pH is low :p

I'll check my local Petsmart out, maybe grab a dozen otos and maybe some tetras if they have any I like! thanks for the heads up

yeah my LFS is kinda like that they blame it all on my water when it tests out perfect like i bought 4 ottos from them and they were skittish to the max, no food at all their bellies were flat. These guys are so hyper and full of energy and my LFS charges more for fish then my local petsmart which is actually pretty good

Petsmart sucks. Last time I ever bought fish there, I bought 10 White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Well, needless to say that was a waste. They died before I even got them into my tank! Every single one of them. While acclimating.

Like people said it depends on the store and location, our petsmart here is actually pretty good , less expensive then my LFS and sometimes the quality of fish is better

I have to agree. My local Petsmart is pretty good. I bought 5 albino corys from them when they had the $1 sale and they are still going strong; and their otos look active and have nice, full bellies. I bought 5 pygmy cories from my LFS and only one has survived.

@wsharp, are all tetras on sale? I wouldn't mind grabbing some more cardinal tetras too!

Just want to point out it may differ among stores on how nice their tanks look, but they are all from the same source. No issues just means, you've just been lucky thus far :-)

Cause i actually care enough to remind others of the risk, thats why i said it. A lot of people on here buy their fish at petsmart or petco, and almost daily a ich thread gets made, and in most cases thats where the fish came from. Temptation is a bastard sometimes

Petsmart Dollar fish in my area
Ottos
Black Neons
Glowlights
Black skirt
White Skirt
Lampeye
Neon tetras
Small Pleco (common type the big monster)

Also they are having a $2 dollar a gallon sale, 10-55 Gallons I believe. These tanks come with hoods. So 40G with Flourscent hood = $80 Bucks
