Wow it's fat. Look in the journals for the hobbiest who documents and breeds them.

so I read that entire thread. And I did what he does. I trimmed everything that needed trimming. Removed unwanted plants and I am planing a water change for tomorrow.

I set out a bucket because it is raining here and hopefully I can collect enough water to do a decent water change.

Otto getting ready to spawn?

Well now there are two fatties both look healthy, color is good, they are eating, and swimming normally. Breathing is a little fast.

I did a pwc it brought the tank temp from 76 to 72 over the course of two hours.

pH 6.8
KH 5
Nitrates 40

It doesn't even look like they are trying to drop eggs. Anyone have any ideas? I'm not super interested in having fry just want to see these girls back to normal.

Pretty sure that's the typical disease Otos get (may be called bloat but I've seen most people say Dropsy). I would monitor the bloat over the next couple days and look for eye bulging, protruding pieces of skin and/or redness of the body which indicates popped blood vessels due to the extreme bloating. I don't want to be a pessimist but I have a feeling it will die soon as I'm experiencing the same situation with my otos right now and all of my research contained the same result-death.

They're still alive. And one is shrinking.

Hunter, are yours pale, or still holding their color?

They're holding their color pretty well surprisingly, maybe slight loss. I came home to the one I mentioned dead just now though and another looks to be getting slightly bloated but nothing extreme.

It is hard to tell from the picture if she is pregnant or sick. They look prety similar but you should be able to see tiny eggs near the base of her tail if she is holding. Mine are usually pregnant for anywhere between 1-3 weeks with a small pocket of tiny yellow eggs. No luck with any fry surviving in my community.

That's too rounded to be carrying eggs. It is a bloat condition and pretty common. Usually goes away on its own but does rarely lead to the worse. Should suppliment diet with some fresh veggies.

Also, Otos are egg layers. She won't drop her eggs. If they don't mate, they will absorb the eggs.

Your timing is perfect.. I did not realize it until u said something but I gave them a slice of zucchini two days ago. Trying to get them to drop. They(I had two like that) started looking better yesterday. They look much better today. Maybe bloat is constipation? Fresh veggies always help me )

I read your thread good stuff. But back to the vegetables. All of my ottos look way better today. They sure seem to respond well to good food.

I was hesitant to give them vegetables because I wanted them to keep my tank clean. But judging how they all look today I think I'll keep feeding them veggies. Besides the pleco and snails were also digging in..
