i agree that this should be a state by state basis but if you look at certain species (fresh and salt) it may not be a bad idea to propose certain restrictions nationally. Look at the lion fish for example. Beautiful fish but its obliterating natural reefs and other fauna. Same for plecos. I just saw a post on here recently about people who release their plecos because they get too big for their tanks and they wind up eating all the fish eggs in rivers/lakes.

it's probably being tried every few weeks...

I cant see such a sweeping bill being put into law though.

I believe that HR996 has died. This won't stop the folks who'd like to ban import (and in some cases, _all_ human / animal interaction beyond birdwatching...) from trying again.

The original bill, HR669 came with a proposed list of animals which _could_ be kept. For the aquarium hobby, that list was as follows:

Crassius auratus.

Yep. One species. The single exotic species I've seen most of in ponds and lakes here in CT. Every other swimming thing in your tank / fishroom not native to the U.S. would have been banned from sale, breeding or transport across state lines.
