mine are pretty small, and very active. how do i know when they are eating? when they are sitting on a leaf?
They are literally always eating, they're pigs lol. Anytime they are attached to something, you know they're eating. Occasionally mine will group up with eachother, play for a bit and swim around the tank then go about their business and keep munching away.
Also, I don't supplement with any food. I feed my other fish their flakes and brine shrimp and the Otos just stick to maintaining the tank.

i'm guilty of the occasional wafer too. my tank was pretty small (8 gallons total) and had only been established a few months, so i was concerned about the amount of avaliable food. i tossed in a piece of veggie or a mini algae wafer once or twice a week. i always pulled the remains out if they were still around after 24 hours, though.
i think the shrimp figured that out and they started grabbing the wafers when they droped and carrying them off!
