Favorite PET fish?

Just curious what everyones favorite pet fish is. What fish species do you love for their personality or how they interact with other fish and/or you? This is not really a what is you favorite fish generally, but which fish do you have that have gotten to be, well, pets?

A few come to mind for me, Botia loaches are really fun personalities and are a personal fave, but the cichlid catagory takes the cake for being as a whole the most interactive with people. My Africans are very tame and smart, as are my various rams. And I used to have a green sunfish (also a type of cichlid) that would leap out of his tank to grab food from my fingers, splashing all over in the process. The other extremely smart and interactive fish I had was a US native fish called a mudminnow. Super plain, but probably the most personality of any fish that size IMO. Lastly, my new elephant nose fish is just starting to get comfortable in his tank and come out more, but I think he will definitely be making it onto this list!

Chocolate gourami has a great personality. Very inquisitive and has an air of grace to it few other fish have.

Re: Favorite PET fish?

I have always enjoyed Angelfish in the past. The ones that I use to have would come up to the front glass and start begging for food every time they saw me. They even got to the point that I would hand feed them blood worms.

I agree. I finally bought some altums again four weeks ago. Prior to that was 1980s
Being blatantly anthropomorphic, I find them regal, brave, curious, greedy, spiteful and cunning.

What more could you want?

To me, oscars are THE prototypical "pet" fish. I think it's partly their personality, partly their size, and partly the fact that they're so often kept just a few in a large tank.

Koi are another that are very personable, often swimming right into your hand.

Big saltwater angels are easy to get attached to, too. Very charismatic (for a fish!), beautiful, lots of personality.

For planted tanks, though, angels, and dwarf cichlids. I've got rams now, but have had kribs, brichardi, julies, curviceps, and keyholes in my planted tanks over the years, too. I tend to keep medium-sized tanks, and a pair of dwarf cichlids is almost always my certerpiece.

Bettas! I love tapping the glass to show him where the feeder shrimp is, he makes a hilarious head-turn when that happens. He also goes to the surface when I go get the TV remote! His greetings are awesome! I've seen him watch TV a few times too ... maybe it's because the tank is a cube.

I have to say my old saltwater porcupine puffer named "E.T." (after the character in the Speildberg movie "E.T.").

Great personality and a face only a mother...err, father could love. Big eyes and always had a smile on his face

R.I.P. E.T.

Not my picture, but you get the point.....

So jealous! The LFS that I worked for when I was in high school (back in the '80s) got them from time to time. Always been my favorites. Haven't seen them in the flesh in years, but someday, I'll do a huge planted tank for a group of them. Awesome fish!

Favorite PET fish?

Badis Badis I have one that is the smallest fish in the tank and always comes out and chases the bigger fish when they get too close to him at feeding time. He also comes out and nearly swims into my hand during cleanings.
