Well, my darling wife is requesting more color in the aquarium. My son wants Neon Tetras, but aren't Cardinal Tetras hardier?

I think that depends. The Cardinals that didn't drop dead in the first week usually last a l-o-n-g time for me, but they're known for dropping with little provocation. Neons have been farmed and can be unhealthy because of the conditions they are raised under. Also, Cardinals are immune to Neon Tetra disease.

If you have both in your area, why not try out the ones you like most?

Having dealt with NTD, personally I would go with the Cardinals. If you do go with the Neons, I have one word for you: QUARANTINE!!!!!!
NTD doesn't only strike Neon Tetras! Safeguard your aquarium and your other fish by quarantining Neon tetras, and all new additions for that matter!!

I remember having this same debat as I setup my community tank. In the end it came down to 12 neons (half a red strip) for .39 cents each or 12 cards (full red strip) at 5.49 a pop.

My 12 neons look just fine.

Edit: I have never had a problem with NTD, infact they were the first school in the tank (2 days after setup, to start the cycle). It has been six months I have still not had one neon death.

At that price (over $5 apiece??), I would have neons too. Cards are 5 for $7.75 regularly in one store in my area. So I keep Cards.

If you want the smaller size but like the looks of the cardinal I'd recommend the Green Neon Tetra. I've been very happy with mine.

They're very nice-looking fish.

I'm negotiating a budget program for a Larger Tank with the Finance Committee. She is impressed with the Smaller Tank, so we may be having a summit soon. Green neons could part of the future residents.
