I'd do a school of toughies for starters. Black neon, glowlight, and gold tetras are all very hardy, plus being pretty and schooling well. I'd only do one school of about 20 fish, and after they've settled into the tank and are comfortable, I'd add the cool fish: dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma/Mikrogeophagus), dwarf gouramis (honey, blue neon, sparkling), angelfish, oddballs, whatever catches your eye as cool and unique. For algae eaters, Amano shrimp and otos should perform fine, although the shrimp might get eaten by angels or dwarf cichlids. There are varied reports on this, but I'v not experienced it, having kept Amano shrimp with apistos, kribs, and discus.
