Markos Black Orchid Betta Spawn 2

as some of you know, i spawned a pair of black orchids over the summer. well now its time to produce the F2 generation. i will be breeding Phantosos, the fish in my avatar, with one of his sisters. interestingly, he has marbled out over the last month, and i didnt even know he was carrying the marble gene. so there could be some very interesting color designs in some of the offspring.

the breeding tank:

yep that is the giant a. petite from my 30C. its only here temporarily, until i redo my sorority tank where i intend to incorporate it.

Phantosos:

WOW! he has really marbled out!! That's remarkable! It's a shame though, because he was awesome as a Blue Steel Black Orchid!

yeah. he even had me scared. thought it was a recurrence of columnaris (as marbling can happen so fast as to mimic something pathological). treated with sulfa for 2 weeks, watching the patches spread but him keep acting normal til it hit me that he is a marble.
i dont mind i think he still looks cool. at one point he lost the black under the blue highlights in his fins only, making him appear jet black with light light blue streaks. marbles are always changing their patterns, so who knows what he will end up like in a month. but he has great genetic material. still a great balog with strong blacks, and no red.

she is a black orchid, but without any marbling (though she likely carries the trait). her blue is royal blue however. so 50% of the offspring will be royal blue, and 50% steel blue.
there is a pic further down.

so i placed the female in the tank in a chimney last night, and released her a few hours ago. she seems very interested in the male. got some really intense colors, and strong vertical bars that last for quite some time after the male is out of view. the male is putting mediocre effort into nesting, but shows off for her constantly. and recently started chasing her around. its been a few hours though, and there has been no damage at all yet. much gentler than the last spawn where their parents tore each other to shreds within minutes.

Im interested to see what the offspring look like! Is marbling a recessive trait?

thank you.
thats a black devil. genetically speaking, black orchids, black devils, and black ice are all more or less the same thing, the only difference is how much blue/red is visible on which individual.
there were a few such devils from the spawn. kept one male and 2 females like that. one of them is a she-devil (pun intended) that is queen of the sorority. as such she has a very dark vivid coloration that i absolutely love, and never stays still for me to get a good photo. might try later today...

thanks for that link! not to derail your thread, but my supposed Black Orchid has a small spot of red in his tail, would that effectively make him a Black Devil?
