Two of my Red Scribblet paired off in my 150g discus tank & spawned. They took care of the eggs but they fungused which I attributed to my hard water. I removed the pair & placed them in a 29g tank. I them began to soften the water using a softening pillow in my filter. They spawned the next day & watched the male fertilize the eggs. Water then had a
gh of 3-4degrees. Eggs still fungused 2 days later @ 84 degrees F. Did I not get the water softened soon enough ;or is there another problem I'm not realizing?
I don't know much about the wate softener you're using, but I have to use RO water and get the tds under 80 for my discus' eggs to hatch. If above 80, then eggs will not hatch. Another issue you may be having is your male may not have fully matured yet and is still not able to properly fertilize the eggs.
40-52 hours for eggs to hatch. Ive had 80-90% eggs hatch with tds near 300. I also know nothing about a water softening pillow. Try using a little meth blue next spawn to help prevent fungus. It is also possibe that the male is to young to fertilize the eggs or that you have two females
there are more things to look into and eliminate 1 by 1 .
1. What filter are you using? sponge or hob filter? try to low down water flow when they lay eggs otherwise strong current/flow will wash male sperm away.
2. Try lower TDS. (eventhough eggs may hatch in high TDS but more chance in lower TDS).
3. Clean and wipes down the tank pretty good. you need to PP it if necessary.
