saw these in the store the other day and they looked pretty cool... i normally dont trust the quality of the fish at this store... so are these readily available? how is compatibility? care and feeding issues?
They are not uncommon fish. You could probably find them at a different pet or fish store in your area that you trust more. They are much like the more common and larger silver hatchetfish in behavior and care. No special care/feeding that I can think of except that they will jump out of your tank at some point. Pretty sure all the hatchetfish I've ever had has met the carpet at some point. Compatibility - a good community fish, not aggressive. Obviously a surface feeder. They look cool when schooling.
I have kept them, they are very nice, peaceful and good eaters.
They will jump, and you need to have every single opening in the tank canopy covered. Even if you have a hinged glass lid, cover the back with some fine netting to let gas exchange but prevent them from carpet surfing.
