Most angelfish grow to a large size and need lots of room. I wouldn't give them less than 6 gallons each to live in. Breeding them is a different story. Also because they're south american cichlids they do better in groups of 6-8 min. But a pair that has bonded can do well alone in a tank that's 20-30g (with no other fish). It's like discus, if they have an odd small number (like 3) someone is going to get picked on and eventually die.

I've had this question for a while now.... if I get 2 small angels, or 3 so they will feel better adjusting. What would I have to do when they grow and there is now space in the tank? Do you just donate them somewhere?

Local privately owned pet stores LOVE healthy fish returned by known customers.

Three is not the number you want to have with cichlids. One will definitely get bullied. I would exchange them at the LFS for credit. That's what our LFS does.

So far I'm known at the LFS as a person who returns dead fish =))) But yes, I would get credit for returned fish.

With 12 little fishes in the tank, adding angels is pushing my non-excising luck. Too bad, I loooove angels.

I have six peruvian wilds in a 125g and they still try to bully each other around. At least with that much space there's plenty of hiding spots.
