Otto questions

Zebra ottos specifically. I've never had an otto before and I was hoping people who have kept them could enlighten me (:

Do they absolutely HAVE to be kept in groups of 6?
Will they get along with a betta?
How active are they?
Will they scratch an acrylic tank over time the way snails do?
And also, are the zebra variety bigger than a regular otto?

Thanks!!

1. No. Although they would prefer it and big groups are your best chance to get breeding (something I always have in mind when I pick up a fish that costs $10 or more)
2. Yes
3. They act like other otos, rather diurnal but can be shy
4. No.

The zebras are bigger than normal ones. But not by much. I guess if you're going by body mass, they're about twice as big. Or so that's how large mine seem to be compared to my others. They're just a little longer and larger in girth.

Also zebras like a more meaty diet than the regular otos, but still their favorite food is zucchini.
A minumum of 3 is a must in my opinion.

Are zebra ottos still good algae eaters?

Mine eat algae tabs.. I think. They look healthy, but never go after any particular food while I'm watching.

I've never seen the "feeding frenzy" that the normal ones will do sometimes.

Mine are in with a betta and they ignore each other. In fact, both the zebras and the betta enjoy hanging out in one of my anubus.

Mine are not very active at all while the lights are on. While I'm watching, they actually rarely move.

I have no idea on the acrylic tank scratching. I'd think not.

I have been wondering if zebra ottos are less shrimp safe since they are more meat eating then regular ottos.

don't be so sure about the betta. the ottos won't bother the betta, but the betta definitely might bother them, especially if it's in a smaller tank. different bettas can have wildly varying temperaments.

+1

I think if I had my betta in a 150gal tank with 3 shrimp and 4 guppies, he would still find them and kill them. lol.

20g platy, , 2 x 10g shrimp, 3 x 20g shrimp, 7.5g shrimp and 1 great dane/mastiff puppy.

My betta doesn't really bother shrimp, he just gets up in their face and watches their little feet move and then swims away. They hide during the day but come out at night. But I've never seen him around fish so I have no idea. He's a pretty horrible swimmer and never flares at anything though. He's in a 6 gallon tank. Would that be too small for 3 zebra ottos? I can just get the regular kind if that's the case.

Kept a betta in with my zebras for a long time. No issues there.

Zebra's are as well shrimp friendly.

I would actually test out your skills and water on a basic otto before spending upwards of 15$ on a zebra
