been cycling a 6 galloin tank for a week with 25% water from my perfectly fine 6year old tank and 70% fresh and got plants and drift wood in is it ready now for a couple of fish
im going to get 3 red claw crabs to start is it to early
also how can i reduce the file size of my photo to create a profile of my tank as it takes 14.2 megapixle images
The used water is doing almost nothing to cycle your tank, the beneficial bacteria is in the filter, on the substrate, etc. Very little, if any, is in the water itself. Also you need to add an ammonia source to properly cycle, I suggest you google "fishless cycle" and read up. Your best option is to take a used sponge out of the 6yo tank's filter, place it in the 6 gallon filter, should be good to go almost immediately. Just make sure you feed the filter until you have fish in there or the BB will die. In regards to the crabs, I think they will eat any fish they can catch, might want to read up on compatibility with them.
uh I cant use the filter media from my other as its a different type if at the week end i get some bacteria stuff (quick start i think its called) and dump a small bottle in would it be ready the following week for 3 crabs without over doing the poo levels
dw I have read how to keep them ive had them before they are ok with tetra that are quick and top dwellers
Your tank is cycled when your water tests show 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and readable nitrates. Water tests are really the only way to know if it's cycled or not.
You can give it a head start. Take the old filter media, soak it in used tank water, then soak new media in for some time. Dump the old water into the new filter. (may give a head start for now)
Just cut a piece that will comfortable fit into the new filter.
Or if there is sponge in the old filter give it a good squeeze into the new filter or water column. If it's a cartridge filter you can try swishing it around in the water column a bit.
