My house temp is around 70 degrees. At lowest 67ish (No LOWER) at night. During day at 72 maybe a little higher. In the summer... Wow south carolina sun. But I want to keep Apistogramma Cacatoides without a heater in a 10 gallon. Yes, no, maybe?
Apistos need to run at least 75, and consistency is better than roller coaster temps. WHY do you want to keep it without a heater? A Tetra preset 50 watt heater will do the trick.
From what I have researched, most people feel that they should be kept at warmer temps. Most places say between 79 and 84. I would not keep them without a heater unless you want your house to be a sauna.
I think 10 gal is to small for a pair Apistogramma Cacatoides.
To start its better to keep 1 male 2-5 female.
Male is 3.5inch female is 2-3 inch.
Both male and female need a territory. If you keep 1 male 1 female, there is a chance that the male will kill the female.
You have to also consider that the temperature of your room isn't necessarily what the temperature of the water will be. Water temp runs cooler than the room it's in... several degrees sometimes. My room got to 64 degrees (cold front came in suddenly); I tested the water temp in a tub that was sitting out and it was 57 degrees.
