I have a pregnant platy and i have a breeding box with the divider so the fry slip through and don't get eaten. I put her in it and i know she will give birth soon but i don't want her in there to long i am afraid she will not like it. also how long can she be in there it's small:icon_frow.
Sorry to say but the answer is yes. Breeding boxes are not a very nice place for fish. They are small and most of the time stress the fish out way to much. I found out the hard way when I purchased and decided to raise Sunbust wag platies. I put the female in one and she not only aborted the fry but died shortly after the incident (I believe from all the stress). I would say it's not worth the risk for HER. I know these types of fish are far less expensive than most fish but thinking this way is unfair to her.
I just let them give birth in the main tank, but then again I'm not breeding them on purpose. My guppies just make babies, I don't see them try to eat their fry most of the time which is why I have a guppy population issue...
Breeding boxes sound mean to me. I would suggest looking into alternitaves. You could put the pregnant female in a heavily planted fry tank so the babies can hide and then take mom out as soon as she gives birth.
Speaking of guppies I just found a fry in the bottom of the filter today. I have no idea how it survived in there.
I have baby guppies today also. i dont remove them from the main tank either. Only the strong shall survive.
