What's The Average Price for Furcata Rainbowfish?

Hey guys, the aquarium adventure by my university just got some furcata rainbowfish, but they have them priced at $12 a piece. i have no clue if its the average price everywhere or if its incredibly overpriced. I have a good feeling its a giant ripoff, even though its a beautiful fish.

I'm guessing that is because they are willing to sell males only. My LFS charges $15/pair (or sometimes a trio.) It's about the same, IIRC for threadfin rainbows too.

I'd buy it. It would cost a lot more to get them through the internet after shipping.

Just buy a pair and breed all you want. If they are anything like signifers or gertrudaes you should have a lot in no time. It just takes a little more effort.

i wish i could breed them, but i don't have an extra tank or the knowledge to do it successfully. also, i don't have the money to just buy them because my job thinks its okay to not give me hours.

From what I understand, Furcatus (not Furcata!), have similar breeding habits to gertrudaes, which are proving pretty stupid easy to breed for me. They do it on their own, with pretty much no special conditioning or encouragement.

Just set up some cultures of infusoria for the fry because when they hatch they are really freaking tiny. Some mircoworms and bbs when they get bigger, then start them on high quality crushed flakes. You can raise several of them to large juvies in a 5.5 gallon tank.

My LFS has these currently at $12 a pair, but they are really freaking tiny. When they get the nice large adults, they sell for $24 a pair. I think I'll get a couple pairs now and set them up in a ten gallon to grow and spawn them.

Wholesale price of Furcata is $2.76 ea. and $1.85 when you buy 20.

Signifer the same and Gertrudae $.50 higher.

$12 seems as a normal markup....

Furcatas breed fairly easily.

For around here, they are usually $3-$4each.

I got 5( 2 female 3 male) Furcata for way cheap from a local breeder, put in a spawning mop (easy to Google) and they were in there every day laying eggs. I'd pull the mop every couple days and pull the eggs off and keep them in a plastic container with a small air stone, When they hatched I moved them to another small plastic container (floating in my 55) and feed them frozen baby brine and frozen cyclops. They are taking forever to grow, but it's possible! Fun to see the eyes in the eggs, then the hatch and the fry grow!

around here juvies are 4-5$ each and are fairly common, but I get the impression from on here that things are just cheaper in this area compared to some other parts of the county

thanks for the help guys! maybe i'll pick up a pair when i get my paycheck. a good rule of thumb for purchasing anything is if you live on long island, expect it to be 5x cheaper anywhere else.

I got a pair of little 1 1/4" ones, male and female, for $15. Seems like a good price for me... They're healthy and happy to eat.
