I like to keep in mind that much information gleaned from the internet is often just rumor or one opion. You can see little green men on the internet. Wikipedia is one of the sources where there can be good info or it can be totally bogus as it is build by users. College profs often find students use wiki as a source that is totally wrong.
So while I can see that a person might be killed in some cases, That would be extreme cases where they fell into the water, could not escape and it would take a really rare case for one to die that quickly.
So I come down to knowing how long it takes for a person to die in really horrible ways and my opinion is that it would be a really extreme case to die that quickly.

If you have a way to watch the River Monster episodes about piranhas I suggest you do. Very informative and puts the rumors to the test.

If a person is injured and there are a plenty of them, yes it's possible.

Candiru fish are much more fearful in Amazon.

I don't think candiru really swim up your genitals.
BBC - Earth - Would the candiru fish really eat your genitals?
They might still be more feared, but just not for legitimate reasons.

Yeah the one candiru "incident" people cite about one "swimming up a pee hole" seems to be veeeery suspect if you look into the actual details of the event. Also, a big part of this rumor includes the idea of candiru swimming up a stream of pee from someone standing above the water, which is just not physically possible.

And for the record, pacus don't eat testicles. That was a joke in a scientific paper that people took seriously.
