No. Carbon removes organic compounds from the water such as medication and tannins, but if left in too long can become saturated and begin leeching those substances out again. If you have a well-established bio filter, you don't need carbon unless you want to remove medications. I use it for that purpose and run it for a week or two, then remove it and throw it out.
