I just completed my 40gal tank build with 3d background!
Here is my process-
Buy materials(here's what I used)
-foamular insulation foam sheet. I had tons leftover.
- 100% silicone caulking. Clear. I used GE brand.
-drylok masonry waterproofer.
-sharp things for carving.
have fun! Cut a single flat piece the size of the back of your tank (I cut out a part for my filter intake) start carving pieces and stick them on with toothpicks to get a good idea of where you want them before everything is set in stone. (Er, silicone.)
this gets messy! I kept a shop vac nearby.
Ta-daa!! Now silicone everything down and wait a day. (I waited two, just to be safe.)
next, mix a small amount of drylok with concrete dye to get your base colour. I used sakrete charcoal colour.
coat everything nicely, make sure not to glob it on and cover all your detail! You want your carvings to be shown.
add the next layer of colour (still using drylok.)
I also added beige but forgot to take a picture.
next do a test fit
silicone everything down, wait a day (or two, again, to be safe)
And fill er up to test!
up.to the room!
Play with sand! Er...wash sand
and scoop it in, then fill it up!
