Ive seen some recepies for DIY CO2 mixtures that recommend half a teaspoon of baking soda along with the sugar and yeast. My question is, what does the baking soda do, or does it do any good? Does it contain nutrients for the yeast??

it raises the kh of the brew which is supposed to keep the yeast happier as the alcohol content rises.
