I'm considering an All-Glass Mini Bow 7 as a planted desk-top tank. The hood comes with a single 14W T-8 bulb. The strip light housing is 3-5/16" wide x 15-1/8" long. Has anyone retrofitted a lighting/reflector set-up to this hood? An AHSupply 2x13W Bright Kit has a 17" long reflector so I don't think it'll work (I'll check with them). What about just adding another 12" T8 and ballast with a HelloLights 14" x 3" mirrored reflector?

I did almost exactly what you are looking to do.

I took a single 1x13watt Delux kit and added another 13w bulb to it, so it became a 2x13 watt kit, with the smaller length reflector. It WILL fit in the hood, but space is a little tight, you just have to offset one of the bulbs on the slanted part of the hood, instead of both of them being right across from eachother. You could easily go with the 2x13 watt delux kit though, and just cut down the reflector a little bit. (be sure to cut air-holes in the hood though, as you will have effectivly covered up the vents in the hood then)

I used a dremel tool to smooth down the screw holes that held the old light housing in, to make the inside as smooth as I could. I then covered the inside with aluminum tape (used for duct work, I would do it again in mylar though, and I still might take it apart and go over it all in Mylar for more reflection) I also have a LED moonlight in there as you can see, and a small PC fan for cooling (which you will want to do to keep temps @ around 77, or a larger fan if you wish to go cooler)

Here are the pics of my setup, I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have on what I did

I have a LOT better luck with aquatic plants than with houseplants ... mb this is a sign.

Hey, great info! I always like looking over DIY set-ups - so much more interesting than store-bought stuff. Anyway, I was at Big Al's and held a 5 gallon Perfecto next to the All-Glass Mini Bow 7 and realized that the AG was essentially a 5 gallon with a bow-front added. I thought that the AG was a taller tank (and thus could accept tall plants) but it was just the base and light hood that were giving it the "tall tank" look. So instead of spending $100 (Canadian) on the AG Mini-Bow and then modifying the hood I've ordered an AHSupply 1x13W Bright Kit that I will place in a DIY light hood and set it on top of the Perfecto 5 (2.4 watts/gallon) with a Perfecto hinged glass lid in between. I should be able to bring it all together for well under $100 including a little muffin fan in the hood. I'll post some pics.

you could have just bought a custom sea life retro fit system but the only porlem its comes with a 50/50 bulb. and a 6700k 32 watt bulb is only 15-20 dollars and this kit bolts rite in to the existing holes in the hood you just ahve to use some computer case screws.
