What type of wood to use for rack?

I'm going to try to build my first rack to hold three 20 longs vertically and was wondering what type of wood do you guys use for your 2x4s? Any info would be great, like I said this would be my first crack at building a rack.

We used kiln-dried 2 X 4's from HD or Lowes and built the rack cutting notches in the four legs to support the 'runners' for each level.

There is a great video on how to do this on tedsfishroom.com by Ted Judy.

You can use metal pre-fab racks.

I am actually going to use Ted's method of racking with the dado cut. I'm fortunate that he lives about 15 mins from me so I've been able to see his setup. As far as the prefab metal shelves go does anyone have experience with these? For the cost of building a wooden rack it seems I can buy one of those Gorilla racks at HD but I wonder if they are as strong as a wooden rack?

You have to check the particular construction of the HD racks as the brands vary and some models are a bit flimsy so check the recommended weight load per shelf.

Also verify the tank will fit between the vertical uprights easily.

There are a few that uses those. A little search and you'll see. The capacity weight is 500lbs for those gorilla shelves.

You can get the 'husky' shelves. There's a 2000lbs capacity for each shelf.

I go with the kiln-dried whenever I can find it. They almost always have kiln dried 2x4s and 2x3s (although, they don't always feel very dry...).

I recently built a stand for a 20XH (same base dimensions as a 10G) out of a ~10ft 2x12 - cut into 2 uprights, put circular-saw dados on the top and bottom, and then the 2 shelves set into those, glued + screwed. Was pretty easy to do- one night of playing with power tools and drinking beer to assemble it, and another night of drinking beer and playing with torches and shellac to finish it.
