Here's a suggestion for something that costs a bit more than conduit but looks pretty cool: Lowes/HD both stock galvanized water pipe. It is hefty stuff and comes in various dimensions from about 1" OD to 2"OD. They also sell all the fittings including flanges so you can anchor it to a floor. They have 90 degree fittings, 45 degree, "T's" and so on. It is threaded pipe and the cool part is that (at least in VA) they will cut and thread the pipe for FREE. As we all know, FREE is good. So you do your measurements and go in to the store and select pipe and someone threads it. You then take it home, wash it in soap and water, dry it, wax it and there you are. I've built stair rails out of it, towel racks and other things. It is not super cheap but it looks good. A bit steampunk.
