I always leave sludge in my brew bottles. Then eyeball some sugar, pour in some yeast and occasionally throw in some old bread or some raw rice.

First off, I want to say that I use much the same recipe that everyone here has already stated, the difference that I havent seen anyone talk about is the fact that I have a 2-bottle system. I use 2 1L bottles on my 20L and 2 setups of 2 2L bottles on my 55g. I find after running both the 1 and 2 bottle systems, the 2 bottle system is far superior for obvious reasons. I change a bottle per week on each system and have them labeled so they run for 2 weeks at a time, then get refilled and put back in the system. My CO2 almost never changes. By the time one bottle is running out, the next bottle has picked up where that bottle left off. This system also lets me not be a critical and I can slip a day here and there without hurting the CO2 levels.
