DIY CO2 Reactor, Diffuser Using Sponge Pre-Filter

Reading this article on DIY CO2 Reactor, Diffuser using sponge pre-filter & pump, began to wonder how the sponge will be affected by the Co2 from a paintball tank. Wonder if it will get sticky and gum up. Anybody know?

The CO2 wont even be in contact with the sponge. Since its an intake tube, the co2 will sucked into the propeller and expelled to the water column.

To answer your question about sponge reacting with co2. I use sponge inside my diy co2 reactor to diffuse the gas for last two months. I don't see any deterioration.
