I think the best way to go about this is to get the intioal tank set up, in order to keep your plants below the lid without doing alot of trimming, you need to know how high your land mass is going to be, and that depends on the amount of water you want in the tank.

Also are you going to be using most of the same kind of equipment in the tank? The filter, underwater heater and stuff? Or will you be getting some old stuff from that 20 gallon tank?
