What would be the best way to replicate a RES in nature?

sandy/muddy bottom with wood for them to come out of.
I think this is a pretty good idea of natural slider tank SlammedDC2's (not a 55g anymore) turtle tank (new pics 2-13)
It hasn't been updated in awhile but you get the idea.
