If you're looking to get into it for cheap - go browse your local garden center. You can pick up excellent candidates such as boxwood and holly that are already a few years old. Look at the trunk and exposed roots for the kind of shape you want. Don't worry about the leaves or branches, those are easy to train - the trunk is the one that takes much more time. I was buying a Yaupon Holly shrub and at the cashier, the lady even mentioned "Wow, this one almost looks like a little bonsai!".
I bought a book on Bonsai that was excellent - I highly recommend it. The author's last name is "Tomlinson" but I don't remember the name. The pictures in it are breathtaking, kind of like an Amano book for inspiration. Some excellent beginners and even somewhat more advanced concepts are covered, as well.
