This is one of my Fav Appetizers, I do believe it is Japanese in origin but i have had it i Japanese,Chinese, and Korean restaurants.
Making it at home is Simple and Easy.
You will need:
1 Lb Bacon(Whatever your favorite brand is i would avoid Maple Flavored bacon though.)
1 lb Liver (Normally Chicken livers are used, but if you cant find them Beef and Pork Liver will also work but requires cutting)
1 Large Onion(again what ever is your favorite type onion i have even used Red Onions)
1 box toothpicks
Grease or Lard(again preference thing Any cooking oil or grease will work)
Use a Sauce pan and Fill it half way with grease(a Deep fryer works AWESOME if you have one) Get the grease good and hot (medium-high heat)
Peal your onion, and cut it into petals(should look like a little boat) Put either 1 chicken liver or one cube of beef or pork liver on the onion and Wrap it in bacon Then push tooth pick all the way through to hold it all together.
Deep fry until completely done, the bacon should be a dark brown but not burnt and should be crunchy.
Serve with either Sweet and Sour sauce or Spicy Asian Mustard.
Have you thanked a US Solider today? If not you should.
