I'm just curious about how many people here are members of the Aquatic Gardeners Association, or of a local club that specializes in planted tanks.

If not I'm wondering why, since the AGA is only $20 a year or something.

I wasn't for the longest time, because I really didn't care. I joined last year just so I could go to the convention in Dallas, and I got to meet Christel Kasselmann, Karen Randel and several other people I had only read about. I'm still only 'eh' about the AGA but I am having a great time being in the local club.

SO tell me what you think.

If I do a follow up poll it would be, "what would encourage you to join the AGA?"

I'm just not close enough to any AGA events that I could participate in.

The only reason I'm not one is inertia. I actually started the process on the website, but was interrupted before I put my money down. I expect this to change soon.

There isn't even so much as a fish club (let alone aquatic plants) within an hour's drive of me, or I would be a member. I've considered driving down for NJAS if they have something special, and I am a member "in absentia" of DFWAPC. I can only participate in that over the ether since the club is a couple thousand miles away. There are great benefits to actually being able to check things out in the flesh with other successful hobbyists, etc.

I'm interested in finding a local chapter, I'll have to look into finding out if there is any good local clubs in the atlanta area.

What are the benefits for joining? TAG & some email lists I wouldn't bother with? Is TAG even worth it? Houston is way too far from Pa for me to even consider bothering with going.

I have no interest on aquatic plants or any plants before until a few months ago. I haven't even heard AGA until you mentioned. How do you find the info. and if there is one in my area?

For me TAG alone is worth the $20, I love it.

I want to thank everyone for responding and IUnknown for posting the AGA link. Everyone who wanted more info, there it is.

As an aside, I am not going to argue with anyone's reason(s) for not joining, I only joined last year and I knew about its existance for a very long time. My only suggestion would be, if you want to come to DC to meet Mr. Amano in November, you have to be a member of the AGA to attend the convention (AGA rules).

There are no 'local chapters' of the AGA. There are local fish clubs and sometimes plant clubs to join but none associated directly with the AGA. If you know a local plant club doesn't exist, do what I am incapable of doing, start one. I can grow plants but I can't organize people for anything.

Everyone else out there... I would still really like to hear your opinion.

Thanks all,

Bump No. 2

I'm part of another local fish club. They are much heavier into fish than plants (but I will try and change that ). If the AGA was near me, I would join for sure
Not sure yet if I want to get TAG...but it'll probably be the case that once I got it, I wish I've had it

There are no fish clubs in the area here. No stores for planted tanks. Not even a place to fill a CO2 tank.
Convention is beyond my costs and I couldn't leave the farm for very long anyway.
I only belong to one plant society, Species Iris Group of North America, SIGNA. They have an awesome seed swap and it gives me access to various iris seed, and sometimes an odd flowering plant from around the the world.

No point in joining just for TAG

Dont see the point... In other words I have no desire to travel a long distance for a convention. No real interest in competitivly showing my tank... As long as I like it that is all that counts.... Most info or problems I run into can be solved or found out on this board in a few days.....

I guess I dont see the benifit... However I am open minded.... Just havent heard any convincing reasons yet...

I have no reason to join as I couldn't afford to attend any special events regardless. There are no local clubs in my area, and retail outlets are hardly comprehensive when it comes to plants in my area.
