Most any computer less than three years old can run at least one version of Vista. Will they run it well? Maybe not.
Anne, depending on the version of Vista your computer is marginal. SMA (Shared Memory Access) video is not the best. And the graphics chipset leaves a LOT to be desired. HP claims that the PCI-E video slot is used but I doubt that it is. Getting a decent PCI-E video card would make a world of difference. Something like this for example.
I really depends on your system. I've been reading a lot about it lately. I wouldn't recommend getting it now as there still might be bugs that needs to be fixed. I usually wait a year later after the OS comes out and then use it on my comp.
I built my computer back in 2002, so its about 5 years old and i've been upgrading it gradually. Here are some specs of my computer;
Epox 8rda+
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
ATi Radeon 9600 Pro
Corsair 512MB
I probably don't think it'll run Vista that great but again it all depends on your system. I am looking into re-building my computer when I graduate high school, so maybe i'll get it then.
As for Vista, its just like any other OS out there. Its a new form of Windows XP, its more manageable and easier to use. But don't get me wrong, some people still use Windows 2000 even today.
But you might wanna read more here if you haven't to get a better idea of what it is;
i played with it at compusa and man i was pretty impressed with it. but you need like 2 gigs of memory to run it because vista itself takes up close to a gig at idle. . my dad was also telling me one of the IT guys at his work has i and loves it but said its definitly a system hog.
until SP1 comes out for Vista, I would not waste a minute on it.
at minimum you'll have to upgrade your graphics card and RAM,
more likely you need a new computer, especially if it's a notebook.
because most will need new computers to run Vista properly,
it's likely Vista will help sell a lot more MAC's than it will PC's
especially with MacOSx10.5 coming out any week from now.
MAC hardware is also cheaper than Vista requirements
and MAC OS and hardware is already well proven.
Vista is trying to be everything the MacOS already is,
but it will be another year of painful patches, exploits
and fixes till we know if MicroSoft eventually got it right.
In the meantime, I'll stick with Windows XP-SP2, soon
to be SP3... XP has another 7 years of support left.
Honestly I'd have to say if you have under 2GB of RAM, don't worry about Vista.
Jdinh - Sorry. It wouldn't be worth getting Vista with your computer. I've used a 9600 Pro (until it decided to burn out), slim chance it will run Vista. I have a card better than that and doubt it. It's a pretty intense OS.
I'm not a big fan on my computer working so hard just to even run. I'll stick with XP for a few years.

I never upgrade the os on my systems. The newer hardware will be more apt to run the newer OS. The funny thing is that unless you get the high end version, they havent fixed the security issues with windoze. I wish I could go apple and be done with it, but I need cad support. Anyhow, vista is probably a good os, will just take a while to debug it.
I love reading about all these people who bought new computers or upgraded their current one JUST for Vista.
It's a freaking OS, big deal. Maybe it's so they can brag to people about having Vista when XP does the same thing. I won't touch Vista for a few years. I'll let the rest of the poor saps figure out the bugs first.
forget vista and microsoft. buy a new mac! the os is already established and they just look so much better than PCs =] most current computer won't run vista unless it's a rather new system (bought in the last year) if you are going to upgrade you PC just put the money towards a mac soooooooooo worth it. down with winblows!
I have XP sp2 running on a Athlon x2 3800+, 2GB RAM and a PCI-e 7600GS (not the best, but good enough). I'll probably opt out of Vista until it proves itself. Even when Windows 95 came out (remember that far back?), I didn't move over to it until 1997 or so, as there were so many problems that I didn't want to deal with. Plus, I was still happy with my Windows 3.11 for Workgroups machine ;P
Why buy a Mac? Why not just install Ubuntu on your PC?
All the new Mac OS is and has been is a *nix port. Apple Acolytes bow down to the holy grail of the Mac not knowing or caring that the actual core of the OS is a 20+ year old operating system. Sure it looks pretty, and sure it has lots of features. But if MS was to even try and add all those features they would be in court till Hell freezes over.
Vista is NOT Windows XP. Vista is a ground up rewrite of the OS. Vista will run fine for most people on 1 gig of RAM. I have three machines running just fine with 1 gig.
On a case by case basis Mac hardware is not actually cheaper than Vista hardware. Within a month you will be able to get a $600 computer that will run Vista Home Basic just fine (actually you can get one for $698 right now. Monitor included). How much is the cheapest Mac? I forget. Seem to recall it's about $599 with no monitor.
Microsoft is not trying to be the MAC OS. If they had wanted to they could have been. Apple geeks keep thinking that the Mac will overtake the PC. Perhaps in your dreams. If Apple was to get smart they would license the OS and get out of the hardware business. But that would be highly problematic for them as right now they only have to support a very small subset of components. Windows doesn't have that option.
Yeah, I'm home, I'm grumpy, and I'm here to clear the air.
I am not computer savy, and don't know much about the new Vista program (I am also not just trying to raise my post count), but I got this link from a friend of mine who's husband got to work with Vista before the release. His name is Joel Bryant...his is about 1/2 way through the clip (if I remember correctly)...here is a link...
even if the core of the mac OS is 20 years old it still works flawlessly! unlike the blue screen of death that has plagued PC user for ever! i think that if you can use the same core software for 20 years then they did something right. i've used both PC's and macs for 8+ years. i would take a mac over a PC any day because you don't have to worry about it crashing randomly or not liking a peripheral. how often do you hear people with macs complaining about getting a virus on there mac??? so go pile on bill gates jock and try not to get backdoored by one of the many inevitable security problems the OS will have =]
Thanks for all the info thus far everyone! I'll have the husband read all your posts.
Also, for some reason, I remember him saying our computer has a 3 gig RAM, memory...whatever the heck it's called. I know this - much about computer specs. I'd rather be aquascaping. =)
I don't really understand the problem with any of Microsoft's programs. All of them seem to work perfectly for me, no BSoD, no crashes, no problem. Throughout the years I've concluded that the user is the main problem, not the OS.
to all those who think mac are great i have to agree and disagree.macs are great for computer illiterate people who if make a mistake have to call someone for tech support.windows is great because it gives the user the freedom to modify anything they want as long as they know how.if your scared of computers go and buy a mac.thats as far as I'm going on that topic.
p.s. im still running windows 2000 pro
