I was running a game and it froze on me before school and I left turning it off. RIght now, when I turn it on, I don't get an image at all, no boot up or anything. The computer is turning on but nothing showing up. The monitor responds as if it is getting a signal but nothing is showing up. I tried to reset it with the keyboard and it doesn't respond to that either so it is not just the display. No loose wiring going on inside that I can see. I pulled out everything and replugged it without any sucess.
My motherboard has a video card intergrated since I got a cheap one and I think the entire thing is busted. It was running for 6 years now so it was bound to die eventually anyways.
So, does this sound like a motherboard problem? or a viral problem? I use AVG/ad-aware on my comp to scan it every few days. I am hoping the problem is isolated to the motherboard/video card.
yep could be corrupt system files if thats the case and its windows xp you can boot to the xp disk and run the repair console . run the command chkdsk /r
this will check the system files and repair if possible.
Dave
Also is this something that happens randomly or is it viral?
I also have a second hard drive on the computer. I am wondering if I can hook up that one to another comp and load a different OS onto it and reattach it as the master on my first comp.

So basically you turn it on and you dont see anything - no usual post screen ? (you know where it tells you how much RAM you have, CPU etc - or it shows the logo of the company that built your PC)
If thats the case its not a software/ OS issue but hardware related.
I am trying the cmos reset by removing the battery since I couldn't find the jumper. It didn't work after 1 min so I am trying a longer one and disconnecting the power from the motherboard as well.
Yeah, I already suspected that the video card component in it was busted. I could tell it was being overworked.
I wish I could just swap mine out. It is built in with the mother board so I can't just take that one piece out. I wasn't thinking that far ahead when I bought it but that was 6 years ago. I am wondering how difficult it will be to find a motherboard that will allow me to keep the other components linked directly to the old one. Some of these components might have phazed out already and finding one that will still work with them might be difficult, but then again i might be wrong.
The current system is running a pentium 3 processor at about 1.3 ghz. I haven't really needed to upgrade until now since I am a fan of playing the old school low quality graphics games.
The CMOS reset didn't work. Waited about an hour for it. I can tell it did something but the screen still doesn't respond.
do you get beeps? those tell you what component is failing. if you aren't getting the single post beep, then you are probably dealing with:
1. bad memory
2. bad motherboard
3. bad cpu
4. bad power supply
if you have spare parts you can swap out (memory is the easiest) then start the process of elimination. if you are getting beeps, then look here
Just buy another computer. You can build a pretty decent one for about 800$
Or, you can try switching out each component hir0 listed and see what happens.
I suspect it's the card and since it's connected to the mobo, you'll have to swap out both, and if you're gonna do that anyway, might as well replace the whole thing.
Sell some plants. You'll make enough in no time
Dont spend 800 on a new system. All you need to get is a new Motherboard and gonna need a new processor. Your old ram may still be good, your PS should be good, got a Hard drive, and cd drives and all. Use newegg for the mb and pros. should cost you less then 100 for a low end equipment.
Right now a new computer might be out of my reach. School expenses already took a chunk out of my wallet already and I have to stretch the money I have. I have an old motherboard I can try out.
My desktop recently went bad too. It happened when I was plugging in my new TV into the computer. Good thing a friend has an extra mobo, video card and processor. I hope replacing one of those things work, I think it is my video card though. Good luck with the computer Jimmy. You must have another one right now or you wouldn't be online, correct?
If you get no video at boot up then it is a MOBO prblem... what you need to do is unplug the power from the PSU (powersuply)... open the case.. reset teh CMOS jumper to reflash the cmos and bios. (might be a good time to get a can of air and blow the thing out (do this outside =---trust me it is a huge mess and may cause an asthma attack---=)) plug the psu back in and power it up.. pres DEL key and see if you can get into the settings of the cmos again.. it might work.. or just get a cheep video card from soemone and if you mobo has an agp port plug it in to try it out... HOWEVER< your video processor on the mobo maybe bad.. not uncommon.. if no agp port you are screwed.. You will have to beg cash from your folks for a new tower.. (i can piece togethter a decent system for about 600.00.. athlon 64 3200+ that will play all the newer games.. ) If you are competent about building a system at all just pm me ill set you up with a good shopping list..
that's too bad your budget doesn't allow a new system (I HATE WINDOWS M.E.!!!). I'd suggest a 128mb PCI video card or higher, so that it can be used on later systems.
I would agree that it's Motherboard/video card related, or processor related. First step of elimination (and easiest) would be the video card replacement. (or swapping the mobo, if you have a KNOWN working one)
(win me) i dont like either when it came out i thought it was a flop i had alot of problems with it on system builds. at work i run xp pro on workstations and all our internet servers in our data center are linux. xp is the best so far for end users but i repair customer compters with xp every day so any os can get screwed .
The motherboard doesn't have another video slot. I wish it did. If I go out and buy a new motherboard and a new video card I am worried I have to buy more ram and a new proccessor that will be compatable with it. That would be close to the cost of a new system already.
Well, If you know exactly what processor and memory you have, then you can find a new motherboard with onboard video that supports what you have. Shouldn't be too hard, except you'd have to look on ebay since the p3 is so outdated, they don't make new mobos anymore that support it (I don't think . . . .)
