I would definitely have him eat soup and drink tea through the day, and gargle salt water at least twice a day. However, make sure that he stays hydrated too! Hot tea, salt water, and chicken soup work really well for relieving congestion and killing germs in the mouth and throat, but they can aggravate a dry cough too! IF he has a dry throat, warm/hot showers help relieve congestion, and you could try a humidifier/vaporizer in his room at night on a "Low" setting.
And yes, as a young kid and if I had a hacking cough, my parents would give me about a half-shot (I think) of whiskey. It didn't taste good, but it did warm the throat and was pretty effective and quieting me down. I don't advocate under-age drinking, but it is what it is! Maybe once he learns how awful hard liquor tastes, he'll stay away from it more. LOL! I barely even have a beer anymore.
And I swear that the flu shot works WONDERS!!! I've gotten it the past three seasons and (knock on wood) have yet to become sick since with anything. I used to get sinus infections or bronchitis once a year on the dot. Now, nothing!
Poor little dude! I hope that he feels better soon!!
