Irregardless of what you may have seen, their are people who still don't know witch of the 3 "they're's" there supposed to use. Don't even get me started on "its", and weather to use an apostrophe or not.
To be fair, English is like a crazy old uncle. He finds things, hoards them and adds them to his collection and you never know really what he's going to do next. But you'd better pay attention because the junk pile might fall on you!
"Carl Rogers, a pioneer of humanistic psychology, claims that those with low self-esteem will be far more likely to attempt to belittle others, with the aim of strengthening their fragile self view. On the other hand, Rogers hypothesizes that those with high self-esteem will have no need to put others down or below themselves; and therefore, would be unlikely to exhibit illusory superiority."
Yeah, but fortunately the Grammar Police will put them in line for impersonating an officer. I honestly don't mind minor or ESL errors, but when someone's post looks like they took their pants off and typed with their naughty bits I tend to object. Or if it looks like they failed the second grade a few times. Especially if they're a native speaker.
There are lots of tools to help make sure your post is readable. It's also irritating when people communicate in a text environment and go 'LOL i dnt care about my typing LOL GRAMMAR NAZI'. Well, duh. Text is all we have to communicate here, so in a way, it's your 'face' here. It's also the same superior attitude, but merely the opposite side of the coin.
It was added much longer ago than you'd think. Like 1934. My 2000 copy of the Webster's dictionary has it.
In the 2nd edition, it was "humorous". In the 3rd edition it was "nonstandard".
It has been in other dictionaries since 1991....
Irregardless of how stupid it sounds, it is a word.
(see what I did there?)
I got in an argument with a my lit professor in college about this. When I pulled out the dictionary and it was there he was pissed enough that he ended class early and stormed out.
Wow, I suppose I should apologize. Not that I am taking any of these posts personal. I have corresponded with some of the posters here, and I have to admit, that I am guilty of such uses as thats and its and leaving the apostrophes off of some of my words. I have also been known to use text abbreviations like LMK or ATM. It's not because I do not know what to use, I'm just lazy. I get excited and my fingers type away while I am thinking and the only thing that I will go back and change, is something that is misspelled...Then again, i suppose leaving off an apostrophe is misspelling as well, eh?
Ha - this thread allowed me to release all the grammar tension the forum has caused me to build up.
Apostrophes, strange spellings that you know their browser is offering to auto-correct and 400-line paragraphs with no punctuation. It's enough to cause heart palps.
Just a pondering, if you start counting at 1 and count up where is the first number you encounter an "a"
