coolie hats

On numerous occasions either working in the garden or fishing a local pond, with the sun beating down I have often wanted to be able to pluck some reeds and fashion up a quick coolie hat. A rough woven reed conical shape with the ends untrimmed to just keep the sun off your neck. With the number of elaborate designs I have seen Im aware there is an art to it so Im interested if anyone knows how, instructions, tutorial, something to get me started.

Ive looked for simple plans but all I get is where to buy one... thats no fun.

i'd check with some universities/colleges that specialize in southeast asian cultural studies (wisconsin-madison springs to mind) they might have the resources to get you started. you might get farther on your own if you find out what the particular style you like is called and search on that rather than coolie hat.
good luck, we have one and it comes in handy in the texas heat!

Are you sure it's not a Kuhlii hat?

It seems that instructions for these hats are uncommon --however, I was able to locate several tour companies that feature hat-making workshops as a feature activity --while you're visiting Asia! If you take a trip to Vietnam or China, there are whole hat-making villages you can visit!

However, after some searching, I managed to come up with this:

How to Make a Bamboo Hat

It may be close enough to what you're looking for!

Also, you might want to take a trip to your local Borders or Barnes & Noble and browse through the basket weaving books. The conical shape seems pretty common in basketry, so you may be able to adapt a pattern for use as a hat. You also just might be able to find a hat pattern!

Good luck!
