After checking out another highly recommended fish-only store
here in San Diego, my girl asked me, "Why do all the fish store
guys seem so snotty?"

I gotta' admit, only one place in my area (Aquatic Warehouse)
has people working on the floor who are happy and friendly.
Most people act like they are getting paid to *not* help you,
or be rude. Of course you can go to the chains were people are
friendly, and crazy or stink like booze - but why are the staff at so
many stores so f*cking poor at customer service?

I'm sure they get sick of little kids running around, and people
asking stupid questions... but...

Whats up?

And its not just fish stores either - its the music shops too.
Its like people work there just to make themselves feel all
powerful by being more experienced than other people.

Wheres the love?

Water cleanses... you know?

i get a similar feeling from several of the stores in the area. i find that when there are a number of younger kids working the floor, no one is really interested in helping. also, with the smaller places often no one wears nametags or a special shirt and so it is hard to tell when they are helping customers or chatting amongst themselves.
when i climbed regularly, someone mentioned a similar atmosphere around the gym and the "pro shop". since i was looking from the inside out, i never noticed it. perhaps it has to do with smaller hobbies...?

30 gallon tall, pressurized CO2...killer lights
50 gallon long, killer filtration, low tech otherwise

The best advice is to find 1 person who is knowledgeable and available and keep going back to them until you get settled. Part of the problem is that the hobby is so diverse (salt, plants, cichlids, Mommy! I want a Nemo!) and such that it is hard to find a person that can help with exotic plants/animals <beyond goldfish etc...> and answer your questions in a reasonable way. Now try to get all the staff to agree on any thing!

As an aside, I stopped by a PetSmart for methylene blue for hatching angel eggs and was helped by a guy who A) put himself through college many years ago by raising angels B) was very nice and C) recommended the competition as they do not carry the product.

Moved to Tucson.

well... if your feeling angry or sad about snotty fish store owners, you can always go to petco and get a good laugh out of the 'experienced' employees.

the other day, my little sister asked if she could put a cory or two into a 5 gallon eclipse with her betta, and was told that bettas are "chinese killer fish, who kill anything you put in their tank

I love petco "experts"

My goal this summer is to get a job at a local chain so I can at least offer the wee little bit of experience that I have with fish (which is so much more than those who work there now it is scary) and my masses of experience with dogs...half the time they stare blankly at me when I ask a simple question like "do you carry such and such food?". Yep, not a big goal, but with school ending the middle of April, and my practicum from the end of May to June it doesn't leave a lot of options for jobs...esp around here where jobs are hard to find in the first place!

That attitude toward customers is not limited to the LFS, unfortunately.
