i'm pretty new to actually growing plants but i do have an eye for design. as a change of pace, try to do the opposite spatial layout as you have now. with your current layout you have a "spatial enclosure," where the space in the middle, or void, is given shape by the things that surround it. i'd try mass in the middle with void on the perimeter. that creates what we in the design business call and "OTV" - object to void relationship. so, move the mass off center for some rule of 3 framing, put all your equips behind it, introduce a background plant, then have the front open for easy manipulation with your smaller rocks and ferns. this gives you a lot to play with upfront that will make a big impact in people's view of the tank.
