I have a great piece of driftwood I picked up from a beach almost exactly a year ago. I think it's starting to rot though . The filters are starting clog every couple of days and I'm starting to get some type of hair algae on the plants sitting on the substrate. Is there any way to save it? Can it scrape it, dry it out, and coat it with something? The piece is about 26" x 10" x 10", deep brown, and hollow. I'm not sure of the type of wood, it's not soft like pine, but it's not hard like oak.
What about coating it with something? There isn't anything coming off, less I actually cut into the wood. What is coming off in the water was very fine and the only way I could see it was in the filter floss. When I rinse the filter it looks like dirty water. Maybe it's in the hollow part. I'll have to look at that.
