Matt,

Unless you're getting full-grown adults I'd highly recommend taking the time to grow them out to the size you want before doing any serious planting. It may take longer, but it'll prevent a lot of heartache and frusteration. If you really want plants in there try putting a potted Amazon sword and some Java fern tied to small rocks. The idea is to have things you can move around and pick up to clean under or do a quick anti-algae dip when the nutrients get out of hand.

Regards,
Phil

I've never regretted over engineering a system, but often regretted under engineering one.

+1

I'd personally wait till they were 4-5" before really "scaping" the tank (unless you're spending the extra $$ to buy them that size up front?). And I'd also leave the tank bare bottomed until then, since cleanup is so much easier. Discus are such messy eaters that sand is going to be dirty really quick, even if you maintain daily vacuuming.

discus will be in a 50 gallon grow out before hand.. I do have some 6" fish comming that might go right into the tank but im not entirely sure yet for sure im tossing some angles in there for the mean time! I am in tie with a discus breeder so im getting pretty top notch stuff for a good price which is hard to come by these times.

thanks for the words of advice!

Heh, if that is a 5 foot tank, that driftwood is a monster.
I have the Schultz APS in my 72 and while the plants seem to like it, it is a bit too light for my liking (sometimes plants aren't held down that well). The silica might help in this regard.
I'm not sure what that plant is in the left foreground, but perhaps it might get too big for the front very soon?
Keep posting pics; looking forward to seeing the fish.
Oh and I don't really know how much filtration discus need but you may want to add a powerhead to ensure circulation since it is such a big tank. I like the Koralias myself.

Wow, you order discus and the tank hasn't cycled yet? Be very careful and do a lot of water changes. But that is going to be a beautiful setup.

How many discus are you putting in this tank? Also might I ask where you bought your discus?

That's going to be a very nice looking tank with that wood in there.
