5 Gallon College Nano

This is my first planted tank and I thought I'd keep it simple seeing as I'll need to move it from time to time. It didn't take me long to move past "low tech" into high tech. The tank has been up now for about two months.

It's sort of a mess in there, but I'm letting everything grow out now to see what I end up liking.

Current Specs:

5.5 Gallon Tank
Miracle Gro soil topped with Floramax
Aquaclear 20 HOB
Hydor 50w Heater
Custom LED light
Paintball CO2 w/ Aquatek regulator (diffuses into HOB)

Fauna:
3 Celestial Pearl Danios
3 Corydora Habrosus
12+ Cherry Shrimp (not counting juvies)
1 Horned Nerite

Maintenance:
50% Weekly Water Change
Full EI Dosing

Started out like this:

Then this:

Now this:

I'm struggling with BBA (or similar algae) and I'm hoping with time it will go away. I am spot treating, have my CO2 running high 24/7, and trying to be consistent with my maintenance. Otherwise, I'm really happy with how the tank is turning out.

Thanks for looking!

Great looking tank.

Fraternity of Dirt #160
75 gallon - CO2 injected
5 gallon tall cube - CO2 injected

Wish I had an entire room dedicated just for more tanks!

Looks awesome. Definitely a manageable size for college. life. Wish I had gone this route rather than trying to lug around a 40 breeder.

Great looking tank. Hard to believe it's only 5g...it looks like a larger tank full of plants.

Thanks for all the positive comments!

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but any advice on how to battle this BBA before it gets a major foothold? It seems like a mix of staghorn / BBA. I'm doing H2O2 spot treatments once per day at 1ml/gal. CO2 running constantly, lighting reduced from 8 to 7 hours total.

I'm wondering if my dirt substrate is contributing to the algae? I've been doing trimming of some sort most weeks and the substrate gets disturbed, possibly releasing ammonia and other nasties. Would this feed BBA?

I don't really have any other algae problems so at least things aren't completely out of balance.

BBA can be an absolute pain. I've been battling it for a while in one of my tanks. My biggest piece of advice is to trim off as many leaves with BBA on them as possible. Also, before you dose your hydrogen peroxide turn off your filter and let the tank sit for a few minutes so when you spot treat the algae your H2O2 stays where you apply it.

Good advice. I'm trying to pull out what I can. My spot treatments seem to only work about half the time. Even on the same leaf, some algae will turn pink and die while the rest keeps on growing.
