Tamelesstgr's 20 High, Update 12_13_10

Update for this tank. I had to remove all the play sand, I was convinced it was causing negative effects on my plants and water parameters. Nothing was growing that was in the substrate. I had a real bad battle with some Green slime algae growing on the substrate and glass. Most likely from neglect over the summer.

I picked up some normal "Gravel" from the Petsmart, it is lighter in color than the sand, but hopefully it will help the plants root better. When I had regular gravel in my 10 gallon, the crypt roots were going crazy.

So I have been splitting my anubias and I picked some more Java fern from my mom's tank, hopefully it keeps this time. I picked up some rotala and ludwigia from the LFS. Found a sweet melon sword too, I don't know how big it will get, but I love the look of it. Still have the crypt balanese in the back, I hope it straightens out a little. Back to dosing EI with Excel, really happy with the look of the tank right now.

It looks great! Do you have two light strips on there?

I have a 20 high that is in total limbo land (it has fish, but no style). Your tank makes me want to fix it up.

Yes, (2) 15 watt standard tubes. One is a GE plant grow, one is the standard warm white that comes with standard hoods. In the last two weeks the rotala has started growing towards the top of the surface. My anubias are throwing out new leaves weekly, and two of them are sending up flower shoots.

Couple of the mature sword leaves have died off so I snipped them. I was expecting that. Some of the Java fern also developed holes, the new leaves seem to be coming in fine.

Maybe I missed it, but what are you doing for ferts? I can't believe how well things are growing, and that there is no algae! I am impressed!

I does EI light with Flourish Excel and regular Flourish. 25% water change 1=2 weeks. I get some algae on my anubias.

I really like the outcome of your scape/tank.
Looks great! I plan on setting up my 20g H in the spring.
I like the rocks around the anubias idea.
You have given me a few nice ideas for my tank.
Thanks.

Thanks for the compliments. I seem to have introduced a disease with some fish from the local Petsmart. Nearly all of my rasorbas are gone. I have to post a picture though, I have 5, yes 5 anubias flowering right now, I have never had that many, 1 plant has 2 flowers.

That sucks about your fish. I refuse to buy fish from the big chain stores. If I ever change my mind, I will be setting up a quaranteen tank first. I have never brought home a disease from locally owned fish stores, (not that it couldn't happen) but I do almost every time I have gotten some from big chain stores (except bettas).

I think the gravel looks good. I have been thinking of switching the play sand out of my daughters' 10 gallon. It is too hard to clean.

I loved the color of my play sand, but it was choking out my crypts and I was convinced it was not healthy. This gravel is from TopFin and is lighter than the sand was, I have had to place some of the stems back in the gravel several times. It's lighter in color than the sand too, wasn't optimal, but it's doing the job. I am planning a 75 gallon from the ground up, probably start collecting over the summer and set it up in the fall.
