MedRed's Emersed Station: Starting with Ground Covers

Well, I can't start my 75p until my stand comes in. Rather than twiddle my thumbs, I decided I might as well get my HC and Lillaeopsis novae "mini" going. What started as a small idea turned into a full grow out station.

I'm using a spare 30 cube and 40 hex to house my plants. Each tank is lit by a 4x24" T5 HO Sun Blaze fixture. I'm planning on a 12 hour cycle. Half of the plants are potted with regular Miracle Gro Potting Mix and the other half with Miracle Gro Seed Starting Mix

I'll keep this updated as I go along

Day 1:
2 Packages PetsMart Pogostemon helferi on the left
2 Packages PetsMart Staurogyne repens on the right

3 Pots LFS Hemianthus callitrichoides
Lilaeopsis novae "mini"... Thanks Minsc!

I'm wanting to add some Elatine triandra and Micranthemum umbrosum "Monte Carlo"

Update:
I changed some things in the left tank, so it's not really equitable to the tank this week. The HC on the left is still in rock wool as a back up if my bonsai tree doesn't make it through the emersed period. I've passed the critical period, so now I'm pulling back on how much water is in each container. Next week I'll begin fertilizing.

Holy crap that Hc grew crazy. Are you keeping it humid with a cover?

yes. glass lid over the tanks. I think the s repens has grown the most so far. It's pretty warm in there too because of the lights. I've seen it at 86 degrees. It might even get warmer than that. I'm going to drop the water level in the containers tomorrow. I think the growth is best when the soil is moist and not wet. The cheap Jiffy pots do a great job at wicking up the water to make sure the soil gets uniform moisture.

I just need to get through this week so that I can start fertilizing. That's when the magic happens!

Good thinking on this and when the time comes its so much nicer to have all that green to choose from to plant. And really smart to use those containers inside the tanks. I wish I had space in my house I would so setup something like this.

Thanks, mot! If you have spare tanks, might as well do something with them!

Removed most of the water for all of the containers. Today was the first day of using fertilizer. I'm excited for next week's results!

I have a few hitchhiking plants. I'm not sure if they are from the soil or what. I'm going to grow them out elsewhere and see what develops.

Thank you, klibs. I'm trying to figure out what else I'd like to add. DHG belem is on the list.

You should definitely do DHG belem. This would be awesome to have at your disposal, easy supply of foreground plants ready to go.

Thank you! I don't think there is other than the regular Miracle Gro is easier to work with.
